UPDATE: Important Information That Can Help You Get Through the Coronavirus Crisis from State Representative Josh Cutler

From Rep. Josh Cutler:

I hope you and your family are hanging in there! Want to make sure you know all the latest developments about our efforts to address challenges of COVID-19. This edition has important updates on small biz loan programs, unemployment benefits, stimulus checks and other types of assistance. As always, please let me know if you need any help or have questions. I also encourage you to check out my website and my Facebook page for updates.

Best regards,

Rep. Josh S. Cutler

PAYCHECK PROTECTION PROGRAM (PPP) UPDATE: The US Small Business Administration will resume accepting PPP loan applications on Monday, April 27 at 10:30 AM from approved lenders on behalf of any eligible borrower. Congress appropriated an additional $310 Billion for the program and added some new regulations to steer more funds to customers of community banks and credit unions. For PPP loans you apply though your bank and they submit to SBA on your behalf. If you did not already start the process with your bank, you need to act fast as there will be a major backlog. https://www.sba.gov/paycheckprotection/find

SBA EIDL & EMERGENCY ADVANCE UPDATE: The SBA will also resume processing EIDL loans and emergency advances that were previously submitted online. They have not yet announced whether brand new applications will be accepted. If you already applied (loan or advance) and got a confirmation code that begins with the number 3 then you should not need to take any further action and you should get an emailed response within approximately three weeks of the date of application. See: https://www.sba.gov/funding-programs/loans/coronavirus-relief-options/economic-injury-disaster-loan-emergency-advance

IRS STIMULUS CHECK PAYMENT TOOL UPDATE: The U.S. Department of Treasury announced Sunday that they have made some upgrades to their stimulus check website and the ‘Get My Payment’ tool function that allows individuals to input their information or track their payment. See: https://sa.www4.irs.gov/irfof-wmsp/notice

EMPLOYEE RETENTION TAX CREDIT (ERTC). The CARES Act includes a good alternative to PPP for some businesses. This ERTC is not a loan or advance that you have to apply for, but rather a direct tax credit that you can deduct from your business taxes and in some cases get refunded directly by the IRS. It’s up to $5,000 per employee and businesses and non-profits of any size are eligible. It does require that your business have experienced a significant loss in revenue or a partial/full shutdown. Details on the IRS page: https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus/employee-retention-credit. A more user friendly summary is available from the U.S. Chamber: www.uschamber.com/ertc

UNEMPLOYMENT FOR SELF-EMPLOYED & GIG WORKERS (PUA). The new federal PUA program provides up to 39 weeks of unemployment benefits to many not eligible for regular or extended unemployment benefits. This includes self-employed workers, independent contractors, gig economy workers, and those with limited work history. Applicants can learn more and apply at www.mass.gov/pua.

UNEMPLOYMENT VIRTUAL TOWN HALL: If you need help applying for unemployment benefits I recommend you sign up for one of the Virtual Town Halls hosted by DUA. They are held daily. Sign up form is here: https://www.mass.gov/forms/massachusetts-department-of-unemployment-assistance-dua-virtual-town-halls

ARTS & CULTURAL GRANTS. Sharing news of another grant opportunity for cultural groups, museums, libraries, archives, & other nonprofit organizations. Beginning May 4 you can apply for grants ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 through Mass Humanities, the state affiliate of NEH. Details here: https://masshumanities.org/Cares-Act/

HEALTH CONNECTOR ENROLLMENT: The Health Connector is offering an extended enrollment period through May 25. This is a good option to look at if you lose your employer sponsored health insurance and are not eligible for Mass. Health. See: https://www.mahealthconnector.org/

PANDEMIC EBT FOR FAMILIES: All families with school aged children who qualify for reduced lunch are eligible for Pandemic EBT benefits. Households will receive $5.70 per eligible student per day, or $28.50 a week. If receiving DTA benefits, your P-EBT benefits will be added to your EBT card. If not actively receiving DTA benefits, you will receive a P-EBT card for each eligible student in your household. The money will carry over from month to month. Benefits that are not used for over a year will be removed from the card. See: https://www.mass.gov/info-details/pandemic-ebt-p-ebt

Hanson Business Network Meeting Notes from September 19, 2018 at Olde Hitching Post Restaurant, 7:00pm

NEXT MEETING: Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. at the Olde Hitching Post

In Attendance September 19: Lew McConkey (Coletta Cutler RE), Joshua Singer (Edward Jones), Laura Willis (Encore Revolution), Laura Fitzgerald-Kemmett & John Kemmett (Coletta Cutler RE & Kemmett Electric), John Kemmett (Kemmett Electric), Becky Yucius (VCA Hanson Animal Hospital), Steve Centola (Music In Motion), Barbara Arena (Granite State Development), Josh Wolff (Hanson Recreation/Camp Kiwanee)

AGENDA HIGHLIGHTS:

  1. Quick intros, welcome back Becky Yucius of VCA Hanson Animal Hospital and Steve Centola of Music in Motion
  2. We jumped into the Halloween Extravaganza, taking place on October 28, so we could address any questions we had for Josh Wolff who shared flyers and more details. To date, Josh W. thought there were 2 businesses and 2 families who are decorating cabins. He’s looking for more to sign up. For businesses, it’s $40 to participate. Giving out candy or some other fun thing is encouraged. The event is from 12:00pm – 4:00pm. Participants decorating cabins can get in as early as 8:00am to set up. There is NO electricity in the cabins and you cannot run extension cords from any of the main buildings. NO open flames are allowed. Josh should be contacted for participation forms. Costumes for cabin participants are recommended. The benefit is getting your business in front of the community, get your names on the bags and on cabin, local cable will be invited to record/report the event as well as the Hanson Express. You’ll find info on the Camp Kiwanee website http://officialcampkiwanee.com/upcoming-events-kiwanee/
  3. Barbara Arena and Josh W. have been getting pricing to print tote bags with business names on them that can be given out at the Halloween event. This is the first event like this, so it’s hard to know how many people will be attending. They are looking at 250-300 bags, so the first 250-300 people to arrive will get them. The print area on the bags can accommodate up to 10 businesses. They need 10 businesses at $50 each to break even on the cost of the bags. Discussion around asking the businesses participating in cabin decorating could be on the bag for an additional $10. OR businesses that would like to be on the bag but not necessarily doing a cabin can participate for $50. Deadline for participation on the bag is October 1 to allow for printing. Deadline for cabin participation is also October 1, but there might be room for an extension for that. Anyone interested should contact Josh Wolff at (Office)781-293-2333, (Cell) 781-563-0010, or email: JWolff@Hanson-ma.gov
  4. In looking at the flyers and maps that Josh W. shared with us for the Halloween Extravaganza,  Barbara suggested having a handout with a map and the business names or family names associated with each cabin should be given as a handout to all attending the event. Parking for the event will be at the Maquan School with bus transportation to Camp Kiwanee since the road is so narrow and parking is limited at the camp. Cabin participants can park in the designated vendor area with overflow at the Cranberry Cove parking area. There was discussion on promotion for the event, several suggestions included promoting on Facebook. ALL HBN Members are asked to promote on their own Facebook pages. Several businesses offered to put up flyers and it was recommended to contact the Hanson Express.
  5. St. Pat’s Day event is scheduled for March 16, 2019. HBN needs to secure the date with Camp Kiwanee. Laura Fitzgerald Kemmett has booked music so far.
  6. HBN Educational Workshop scheduled for January 14, 2019 at Town Hall. Topic will be “Finding the Perfect Rental Space for Your Business” to be presented by Lew McKonkey
  7. Hanson Day scheduled for June 1, 2019 – Josh Singer will be leading the coordination of this event, but not focusing on it until after January 1, 2019. The event will be positioned as a Hanson Business Network sponsored event and will take place on Town Hall Green. However it is not limited to just business participants. It is meant to be an all inclusive get-to-know-Hanson event. A subcommittee will be needed. Participants will include: Volunteer/non-profit organizations, Churches, Businesses, School organizations, Scouts, etc.
  8. Josh is confirming our meeting location change for October. It’s slated to be at Meadowbrook Restaurant on Rte. 27. To reserve room space, the Hitching Post is implementing a room fee going forward.

AGENDA HIGHLIGHTS:

  1. Quick intros, welcome to our newest member Lew McConkey
  2. Josh reported on his meeting with Mike McCue re: Hanson Day.
  3. Laura reported that she worked with Scribendi to add Meeting and Notes section on the HBN website. She has been updating info as she gets it.
  4. It’s time to sign up for Halloween Event at Camp Kiwanee. This can be a great opportunity to reach out to the community while helping to celebrate Halloween with Hanson families and groups. For $40 per cabin, HBN members can work their magic decorating a cabin (inside and/or outside) for trick or treaters to stop by and enjoy (with their parents – great opportunity to share info about your business with your neighbors while having lots of fun) This will be held in the South End where there will be music. Camp Kiwanee is also holding games/activities for the young’uns in the Lodge. Since there are limited cabins for each group, be sure to fill out your application soon. You’ll find it on the Camp Kiwanee website (http://officialcampkiwanee.com/upcoming-events-kiwanee/
  5. Speaking of Camp Kiwanee, their Cornhole Tournament Fundraiser has been rescheduled to March 30, 2019, so keep this on your radar if you’d like to participate.
  6. Decision to forward with our bimonthly small business related trainings. Josh will be booking a room for these, and they will start in November of this year. Lew has graciously volunteered to be the first presenter in this series and has some great ideas already for potential topics. These trainings will be educational and not sales pitches. By attending you will: very likely learn something new to help your business; find another local business owner who you might be able to partner with or refer customers to; and get to meet other business owners in Hanson area who also attend. That’s how we grow our personal business networks, as well as the HBN. Please think about what topic you could you present to the group in January, March, May or July of 2019. Some possible topics of interest: How to search for that perfect business location; How to navigate red tape; How to attract and retain good employees; or How to attract the right client. If you have questions, come to the next HBN meeting or contact Josh or me for more information.

Hanson Business Network Meeting Notes from July 18, 2018 at Olde Hitching Post Restaurant, 7:00pm

NEXT MEETING: Wednesday, August 15, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. at the Olde Hitching Post

In Attendance July 18: Nadine Pfautz (Pfautz Consulting), Laura FitzGerald-Kemmett and John Kemmett (Kemmett Electric, Coletta Cutler Realty), Kristen Ford-Hernandez (Premiere Pros Painting & Carpentry), Joshua Singer (Edward Jones), Maureen Twomey (My Offbeat Creations), Milinda McGraw (MJ & Associates; Yes, There’s An Oil For That), Barbara Arena (Granite State Development), Becky Coletta (Coletta Cutler Realty),  Ann Stewart (Jack Conway RE), Josh Wolff (Recreation Director at Hanson Recreation/Camp Kiwanee)

AGENDA HIGHLIGHTS:

  1. Quick intros with lots of new participants – welcome all!
  2. Josh Singer has a meeting with Mike McCue on July 24 to start the process for planning a Hanson Day to be held in late spring/early summer of 2019. More soon.
  3. Josh Wolff attended to tell us about the Halloween event being planned by the Recreation Committee at Camp Kiwanee on Sunday, October 28 from 1-4 p.m. Lots of discussion about how HBN members can be actively involved, and we committed to getting at least 10 businesses to host cabins. The tentative fee will be $40 that will help Camp Kiwanee to cover costs for the event. Hosting would entail decorating in front of a cabin in the south end and providing treats for the trick or treaters. Barbara Arena is looking into costs for providing reusable trick or treat bags that would include sponsors’ business names.  This could be a great opportunity to support the community and get the name of your business out there to all the parents.  Over the next 1-2 weeks, Josh W. will:
    • Finalize if there will be a rain date or moving the event to the Lodge if it rains
    • Determine if they can do electricity in each/some of the cabins
    • Create forms for businesses who want to participate
    • Reach out to Key Club/HS Drama Club about the possibility of doing Haunted Houses in the North End
  4. Josh Wolff also asked us to pass along info about their upcoming Cornhole Tournament Fundraiser. On Sunday, September 16 from 12pm-4pm, The Hanson Recreation Department is putting together a Cornhole Tournament Fundraiser to support the creation of a second beachfront dock system at Camp Kiwanee behind the Needle’s Lodge. The cost per team is tentatively set at $20. Location is TBD – the location plan was originally the Cranberry Cove; but looking at other options as well. How Hanson businesses can help:
    • Donate items/gift cards for raffle
    • They plan to sell concessions at the event, so will be accepting food donations from local restaurants
    • They would like a nice prize for the winner of the tournament (maybe Red Sox tickets or something like that)
    • If any businesses have cornhole sets that they would be willing to let them borrow, it would be greatly appreciated
    • Of course, if you’d like to participate in the tournament that would be great, too
    • If you have questions about this, please contact Josh at jwolff@hanson-ma.gov
  5. Kristin-Ford Hernandez has agreed to take over the Membership/Networking role. She will report to the group on some ideas at the next meeting.
  6. Looking for someone to work in the Community Outreach role, since Claire Hughes is no longer able to commit to it. Contact Josh Singer if you’re interested and/or would like more information. And a big thank you to Claire for all her work over the past year.
  7. Josh S reported that the Hanson 2020 Anniversary Committee (a town committee) is looking into printing up Town Maps that would be given out at the event and available in Town Hall. This would be another opportunity for name recognition for local businesses. Details, including pricing, are being researched.
  8. John Kemmett reported that he talked with the Old Colony Planning Council (OCPC) and they’d love to come speak with our group. Working on the right person and date. More soon.

Hanson Business Network Meeting Notes from June 13, 2018 at Olde Hitching Post Restaurant, 7:00pm

The June 2018 Hanson Business Network (HBN) meeting was held on the 13th at the Olde Hitching Post, 48 Spring St (Rte 58) in Hanson from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.

Please note that the June meeting date had to be changed after the May notes were sent out. Our apologies for anyone who had planned to come at the originally scheduled time, but didn’t get the info about the change.

NEXT MEETING: Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. at the Olde Hitching Post

In Attendance June 13: Steve Centola (Music ‘N Motion), Laura FitzGerald-Kemmett and John Kemmett (Kemmett Electric and Coletta Cutler Realty), Kristen Ford-Hernandez (Premiere Pros Painting & Carpentry), Joshua Singer (Edward Jones), and Maureen Twomey (My Offbeat Creations)

AGENDA HIGHLIGHTS:

  1. Josh will set up a meeting with Mike McCue to start the process for planning a Hanson Day to be held in late spring/early summer of 2019.
  2. Laura brought up idea for HBN businesses hosting a Halloween event at Camp Kiwanee. This could be something along the lines of local businesses setting up by the cabins (great chance to play dress up) passing out treats to the kids and info on their services to the adults. Maybe a scavenger hunt with prizes donated from local businesses. Maureen will be meeting with Josh Wolff (CK director) before the next meeting and report back to group.
  3. It’s time to pull together some training/networking events for our larger HBN group. This is a great chance for our members to share their considerable talent and expertise with the group. This would NOT be a direct selling opportunity, but rather a sharing of information of use to other business owners.  If you’d like to be a featured presenter, you can respond to this email to get the ball rolling. If you have questions about the process, just ask.
  4. Brainstormed some topics of interest including:
    1. Old Colony Planning Council services
    2. Networking skills
    3. Financing services for your customers and for your business
    4. Inspirational
    5. Work/Life Balance (how does the small business owner clock out?)
    6. Using social media to gain sales
  5. Brainstormed on how to make our name (Hanson Business Network) better explain who we are. Our group includes businesses based in Hanson or doing business in Hanson, and we have always been open to businesses in neighboring towns. Here’s the link to a fuller explanation: https://www.hansonbusinessnetwork.com/about-the-hbn/

Hanson Business Network Meeting Notes from May 16, 2018 at Olde Hitching Post Restaurant, 7:00pm

The May Hanson Business Network (HBN) meeting was held at the Olde Hitching Post, 48 Spring St (Rte 58) in Hanson from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.

In attendance: Josh Singer from Edward Jones; Steve Centola from Music ‘N Motion; Maureen Twomey from My Offbeat Creations; Laura Willis from Encore Revolution; Laura FitzGerald Kemmett and John Kemmett from Kemmett Electric and Coletta Cutler Realty; Danielle Sheehan from E. Sheehan Corporation.

  1. Meeting started with intros all around and updates of what members have been doing. A few tidbits:
    • Josh was on WATD radio today with Mark Greene. I guess he’s done this a number of times and this is the first some have heard of it. This was a good reminder to all members that it’s important to let others know about the cool stuff we do. It’s a good business strategy.
    • This was Steve’s first time at our meeting. (see Item 8) When we talked about Hanson Day, we discovered that he’d DeeJayed at the last one held at Camp Kiwanee in 2015!
    • Laura F-K and John have been quite busy – with both new and repeat clients.
    • Laura W recently did a Vision Board workshop at Laura F-K’s “day job”, and it went over very well.  She has been very busy doing more speaking, career coaching and personal/business branding workshops.
    • Claire Hughes has rebranded her business from Breathe Easy Concierge Services to Claire’s Inspired Home, so if you’re looking for her keep that in mind.
    • Danielle reported that they’ve been super busy since spring has sprung with a vengeance.
  2. Mike McCue sent a message that he wasn’t able to get to the meeting as he’d hoped, but is very interested in working with us on Hanson Day. It’s likely too late to pull something together for this year, but not too early to start planning for next year.  Josh will be contacting him to move forward.
  3. Discussion about the costs and merits of pulling together a Hanson map. The ideal would be to have something that is available at Town Hall for folks new (or even not so new) to town. There would be advertising spots available for local businesses to sponsor the printing costs. This could also be a great thing to give out at events like Hanson Day and our 200th Anniversary celebration. More soon on this high visibility opportunity and community service combined.
  4. John will be sharing his insights about Old Colony Planning Council with Danielle. He recommended we check out their website for the many resources they have for small businesses and women-run businesses
  5. Enlightening discussion about how interconnected many in the group have become. We came to the realization that one of the biggest benefits of this group is relationship building and supporting each other in our business endeavors. We are often in positions where a customer, friend or family member needs a service that we don’t supply…but we know someone who we feel good about recommending. Or we know someone who we trust to ask for a recommendation. The more time we spend with people, the more we learn about their businesses and skillsets. And even more important, we learn about their character – are they trustworthy, do they follow through on promises, are they thorough, etc. And the cost for all this? Priceless.
  6. Laura W will be working on the website to find ways to streamline it a bit to make it easier to update and find info quickly.  Check it out at when you get a chance www.hansonbusinessnetwork.com
  7. We’d like to tally the results of the HBN survey. We need as many different perspectives as possible If you haven’t already done so, please take a couple minutes now. It will help us in our mission to connect business owners in the area, help them grow, and provide the resources you need to succeed.   https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/9GRG9CP
  8. Discussion on how the mission of the B.O.S.S. Networking events recently started by Kristen Ford-Hernandez, from Premier Pros Painting and Carpentry, might complement our own. Josh had attended the May meeting last week and actually met Steve there, which is how Steve heard about us.
  9. Discussion of how to best utilize Facebook without overwhelming anyone with administrative duties. Our current page is underutilized, so we’ll make an effort to add more posts to it. www.facebook.com/groups/HansonBusinessNetwork
  10. Next meeting will be held at the Olde Hitching Post on Wednesday, June 20 at 7:00 p.m. Hope to see you there.

Hanson Business Network Meeting Notes from April 18, 2018 at Olde Hitching Post Restaurant, 7:00pm

In attendance: Josh Singer (Edward Jones), Maureen Twomey (My Offbeat Creations), Laura Fitzgerald Kemmett (Kemmett Electric), John Kemmett (Kemmett Electric), Laura Willis (Encore Revolution)

NEXT MEETING: Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. at The Olde Hitching Post

  • Town is looking for 2 people from local businesses to join the Economic Development Committee
  • HBN survey to be reviewed again, then sent out to distribution list
  • John updated group on his meeting with the Old Colony Planning Council and recommended we check out their website for the many resources they have for small businesses and women-run businesses.
  • Discussion of how to pull together a small Hanson Day celebration with our limited resources.
  • Location – convenient, high traffic, parking all important; Indian Head School?
  • Pick a date and check with Board of Selectmen
  • Mini touch a truck
  • A few food trucks (check with Board of Health for requirements)
  • Bounce house
  • Discussion of HBN purpose and need to clarify it with a tag line
  • Two major purposes from the start have been getting to know other business owners and their skills so we can make GOOD referrals and support/learn from each other. Some ways to do this include:
  • Getting more business owners to meetings on a regular basis
  • Incorporating mini-trainings at start of meetings
  • Trainings by our members so they can share their expertise and other members can learn something useful from them
  • Round table discussions
  • Panel discussions
  • Elevator speech introductions (might have to time these to keep things moving)
